Sikhs commemorate the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dav, the fifth Guru and the first Sikh martyr (dying in 1606 after being tortured), on June 16. Guru Arjan Dev was the first Guru to serve as the temporal and spiritual head of Sikhs, championed social reform and extended missionary efforts, updated scriptures, and was a prolific poet. The holiday is celebrated with reading the Sikh holy book, reciting hymns and attending lectures. There may also be a procession with sweets given out at gurdwaras.
